Indigestion
Upset stomach? Feeling queasy? Rumbling belly? All are classic presentations of indigestion. Also called dyspepsia, indigestion is not a disease though it may be a sign of an underlying condition. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or another digestive disease may be the reason for any indication of indigestion. Conventionally speaking, any discomfort in the upper abdomen may be called indigestion.
Symptoms are many and you have probably experienced one or more of them after eating a big holiday meal or celebratory dessert. Early fullness during a meal, uncomfortable fullness after a meal, burning sensation in the upper abdomen, bloating in the abdomen, nausea, belching, acidic taste in the mouth, abdominal pain, flatulence, and growling belly. It is necessary to know that heartburn is not indigestion. A burning sensation in the chest is a different symptom that may accompany indigestion but indicates another condition.
The causes of indigestion are directly related to lifestyle and habits. Those who consume relatively large amounts of alcohol, ingest stomach irritating pharmaceuticals (e.g. pain relievers such as aspirin), prone to strong emotions (i.e. anxiety or depression), or consistently overeat will most likely experience indigestion regularly or more often than others.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has built in a structure that beneficially influences all these factors. Whether it is lifestyle contributing factors that lead to indigestion, or simply the symptoms of indigestion, TCM is designed to address these and more. Acupuncturists are trained to see patterns in the body that cause dis-ease. That matrix of factors creating an arena of discomfort or pain is unraveled by an experienced practitioner. Viewing the body as an intricate complex of networks that connect, TCM seeks to coordinate the vast processes of the body to bring forth harmony and balance. In our view, an imbalance is the root of dis-ease or pathology. Restoring balance will obliterate the symptoms of disharmony.
